Oreo: The Little Dog Who Survived Six Months Alone in a Parking Lot

For at least six months, a small dog survived alone in a busy Los Angeles shopping center parking lot. Cars came and went, shoppers hurried past, and through it all, the tiny dog kept himself alive in a place that was never meant to be a home.

A Dog No One Could Catch

When rescuer Suzette Hall of Logan’s Legacy 29 finally heard about him and went to find him, the little dog was so dirty and severely matted that he looked like a discarded mop. She later named him Oreo.

Hall and her volunteers spent more than a week trying to rescue the frightened pup, often staying out late at night and returning again at 2 a.m. But Oreo avoided every trap and kept his distance from people after so long on the streets. They were not helped by shoppers or mall employees either. Some people chased after him, while others sabotaged their efforts, thinking the small dog was happy where he was.

The Night Everything Changed

As a storm approached, the rescuers doubled their efforts. Then they caught a lucky break one afternoon when they found Oreo fast asleep. Two volunteers quietly approached him, gently covered him with a blanket, and safely scooped him up. It felt like a miracle. Suzette and the volunteers sighed with relief and happiness.

And Oreo appeared happy too, calm and curious about what his rescuers were about to do.

Underneath the Matting

Oreo was taken to the vet, where he was shaved down and treated. Underneath all the painful matting was a sweet little dog finally getting a fresh start. He went into foster care, leaving behind the lonely parking lot life he had endured for far too long.

Oreo’s story shows what patience and kindness can do. For six months, he survived on his own. All it took was a few people who refused to give up, and one quiet afternoon, to change his life forever.
