The one apartment challenge is barking. Yorkies notice everything: the neighbour’s footsteps, the lift bell, a delivery at the door. Training a “quiet” command, giving your Yorkie puzzle toys, and making sure it gets enough play all help keep barking under control. A tired Yorkie is a quieter Yorkie.<\/p>\n
Yorkies also do well with owners who work from home or are around a lot. They bond deeply and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long hours, so if you are out all day, consider a dog walker or a companion arrangement.<\/p>\n
Yorkies can be wonderful with children \u2014 affectionate, playful and endlessly entertaining. But they are fragile, and that matters. A Yorkie can be seriously hurt by a fall, a squeeze or rough play, so Yorkies generally do best with older, gentler children who understand how to handle a small dog.<\/p>\n
Teach children to sit on the floor when holding the Yorkie, to play gently, and to respect the dog’s space when it is eating or sleeping. Supervise all play between small children and Yorkies. When the rules are clear, the bond between a Yorkie and a child can be beautiful \u2014 the dog becomes a loyal little shadow and playmate.<\/p>\n
Yorkies often get along well with other pets, especially if they grow up together. They tend to be confident with other dogs, sometimes too confident \u2014 a Yorkie will happily challenge a dog many times its size, so supervise meetings with larger dogs and step in before play gets rough.<\/p>\n
With cats, Yorkies are usually fine, though their terrier instincts may make them want to chase. Early, calm introductions and a safe space for the cat solve most problems. With smaller pets like rabbits or hamsters, be cautious \u2014 the terrier prey drive is real, and a Yorkie should never be left unsupervised with a small animal.<\/p>\n
Multi-pet homes work best when every animal has its own food bowl, bed and safe retreat. Yorkies are possessive little characters and appreciate having their own things.<\/p>\n
Life with a Yorkie is never boring. You will have a dog that follows you from room to room, greets visitors with great ceremony, burrows under blankets, and supervises everything you do with great seriousness. Yorkies are funny, loyal and devoted \u2014 they choose their person and love them completely.<\/p>\n
They ask for little: your lap, your attention, a walk, a game and a warm bed. In return, they give you years of companionship, laughter and love, all in a package small enough to carry.<\/p>\n
