Yorkies are intelligent and quick to learn, but they are also confident, stubborn and convinced they run the house. The good news is that with patience, consistency and the right approach, a Yorkie can be a beautifully well-behaved little dog. The secret is to train the dog in front of you — small in size, huge in personality.

House Training: Patience Is Everything

House training is the challenge most Yorkie owners mention first. Small bladders mean frequent trips outside, and Yorkies can be slow to fully house train — sometimes taking several months longer than bigger breeds. That is normal, not a failure.

Set a strict routine: out first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, after play and every hour or two in between. Praise and treat the instant your Yorkie goes in the right place. Keep a close eye indoors and learn the signs — circling and sniffing mean “out, now.”

Puppy pads near the door are a useful backup, especially for apartment owners or in bad weather. Just be consistent: if pads are allowed, keep them in the same place. And never scold accidents. Your Yorkie will not understand, and scolding teaches it to hide from you instead of learning.

Barking: Teaching “Quiet”

Yorkies are watchdogs by nature. They were bred to notice everything and announce it, and they take that job seriously. Doorbell, stranger, squirrel, leaf — all of it gets reported at full volume.

You cannot train a Yorkie never to bark, and you should not try. Instead, teach a “quiet” command. Let your Yorkie bark once or twice, then say “quiet” calmly, show a treat, and reward the moment it stops. Repeat patiently — this takes time, but it works.

Also reduce the triggers where you can. A Yorkie that barks at the window all day may do better with the curtains partly closed or with a puzzle toy to focus on. And make sure your Yorkie gets enough exercise and mental stimulation: a bored Yorkie barks far more than a tired one.

Socialisation: Confidence Without Fear

Yorkies are fearless, which sounds good until your two-kilogram dog tries to boss around a German Shepherd. Early socialisation teaches your Yorkie to be confident without being reckless.

Introduce your Yorkie to different people, sounds, places and other dogs in a calm, positive way. Keep meetings with larger dogs supervised and brief at first, and step in before play gets rough. A Yorkie that has met the world gently grows into a relaxed adult; one that is sheltered from everything can become nervous and snappy.

Watch for fear-based behaviour: trembling, hiding, growling at strangers or snapping when picked up. These are signs your Yorkie needs more gentle socialisation, not punishment.

Obedience: Short, Fun and Rewarding

Yorkies learn commands quickly when training is fun. Keep sessions very short — three to five minutes, a few times a day — and use small, tasty treats. Teach sit, down, come and stay first, and practise in different rooms and places.

Consistency is the hard part, because Yorkies are charming rule-breakers. If jumping on the sofa is sometimes allowed and sometimes not, your Yorkie will keep trying. Decide the rules as a household and stick to them — every person, every time.

Avoid harsh corrections entirely. Yorkies are sensitive little dogs, and harsh handling damages trust and can make behaviour worse. Positive, patient training builds a Yorkie that wants to cooperate.

The Payoff

A trained Yorkie is a delight: a tiny dog that comes when called, walks nicely, greets politely and knows when to be quiet. It takes patience — sometimes more than with a bigger breed — but the result is a confident, well-mannered companion that fits anywhere and charms everyone.

Your Yorkie may be small, but its capacity to learn is not. Teach it well, and it will surprise you every day.

Training a Yorkshire Terrier is a study in contrasts.
