There is also nothing quite like the first few nights — the whimpering, the 2 a.m. toilet trips, the chewed shoes. The first weeks are wonderful and exhausting in equal measure, but a little preparation makes all the difference.

Before Your Puppy Arrives

Set up your home before the puppy does. Choose a quiet corner for a crate or bed, stock up on puppy food, a collar and lead, food and water bowls, chew toys and puppy pads. Puppy-proof the house: move cables, shoes, medicines and anything chewable out of reach, and block off rooms you do not want the puppy in.

Pick a vet in advance and book a first check-up for the first few days. Ask the breeder or shelter what food the puppy is eating and keep it the same at first — changing food suddenly upsets small stomachs.

The First Few Days

The first days are about settling in, not training marathons. Your puppy has just left its mother and littermates, and everything is new. Keep things calm, let the puppy explore its space, and introduce family members gently, one at a time.

Nights can be hard. A crate beside your bed helps — the puppy can hear and smell you, which is comforting. Expect toilet breaks during the night for the first weeks; puppies have small bladders and cannot hold on for long. Keep night trips boring: out, toilet, back to bed, no play.

Feeding and Sleep

Feed your golden puppy three to four small meals a day at first, moving to two meals as it grows. Use a good-quality puppy food and measure portions — goldens gain weight easily even as puppies. Fresh water should always be available.

Puppies sleep a lot — eighteen to twenty hours a day is normal. That sleep is when they grow and process everything they are learning, so let a sleeping puppy sleep. A tired, overstimulated puppy becomes a bitey, wild puppy, so enforced naps in the crate are a kindness, not a punishment.

House Training and Early Learning

House training is mostly about routine. Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, after play and every hour or two in between. Praise and treat immediately when it goes outside. Accidents will happen — clean them calmly and move on.

Start teaching the basics right away: the puppy’s name, sit and come, in short, fun sessions with treats. And begin socialisation early: gentle introductions to different people, sounds, places and other dogs, always positive and never forced. The experiences your puppy has now shape the adult dog it becomes.

Chewing, Biting and Boundaries

Golden puppies explore the world with their mouths, and those needle-sharp puppy teeth will find your hands, clothes and furniture. Redirect biting to a toy every single time, and give your puppy plenty of safe things to chew. If biting gets wild, a short calm break helps the puppy learn that rough play stops the fun.

Set boundaries early and kindly. Decide what the rules are — sofa or no sofa, which rooms are allowed — and keep them consistent across the whole family. Puppies learn fast when everyone follows the same rules.

Enjoy It — It Passes Quickly

The puppy stage is intense, but it passes fast. In a few months your clumsy little golden will be a gangly teenager, and before you know it, a calm adult dog. Take photos, be patient with the chaos, and enjoy the small moments: the first successful sit, the first walk on the lead, the first time your puppy falls asleep on your feet.

A golden retriever puppy is a lot of work — and one of the best decisions you will ever make.

There is nothing quite like bringing home a golden retriever puppy: the soft fur, the clumsy paws, the way it falls asleep mid-play as if

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

3

post-1957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-viral-articles
https://fliqora.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/media-generation-golden-retriever-puppies-hero-0-7c084679-48c8-4008-9902-879e5856ba13.jpg
["GET
