The Yorkshire Terrier — the Yorkie — weighs barely more than a bag of sugar, yet it carries itself like the biggest dog in the room. With its silky steel-blue and golden-tan coat, its famous little top knot and its fearless heart, the Yorkie has gone from a working-class rat catcher in Victorian England to one of the most loved companion dogs in the world.

A Small Dog with a Working Past

The Yorkie was developed in Yorkshire, England, in the 1800s. Scottish weavers who moved south for work in the textile mills brought small terriers with them, and those dogs were bred to hunt rats in the mills and coal mines. They were tough, quick and brave — small enough to squeeze into tight spaces, but bold enough to take on the job.

By the late 1800s, the breed had caught the eye of Victorian high society. The long, silky coat that once protected a working dog in a mill became a fashion statement, and the Yorkie moved from the factory floor to the lap of luxury. The American Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1885, and it has been a favourite ever since.

Personality: Brave, Loyal and Full of Attitude

Yorkies are famously confident. They are affectionate and deeply loyal to their people, and they love being the centre of attention. They are clever, quick to learn and full of energy — always ready for a game, a walk or a cuddle on the sofa.

They can be a little vocal and a little stubborn, and they do not always realise how small they are. That fearless streak is part of their charm, but it also means early socialisation and gentle, consistent training matter. With positive reinforcement, a Yorkie learns fast and loves to show off what it knows.

Yorkies do well in apartments and small homes, and they make wonderful companions for singles, couples and families with older children. They bond closely with their owners and happily follow them from room to room.

The Famous Coat and Top Knot

A Yorkie’s coat is one of its most recognisable features: long, fine and silky, in steel blue and rich tan. Many owners tie the hair on top of the head into a small top knot — the look that has become the breed’s signature.

That beautiful coat needs care. Daily brushing keeps it free of tangles, and regular baths keep it soft and shiny. Many pet owners choose a shorter “puppy cut” to make grooming easier. Whatever the style, dental care matters too — small breeds are prone to dental problems, so regular brushing and vet check-ups help a lot.

Exercise, Training and Health

Yorkies do not need long hikes. A couple of short walks a day plus playtime indoors is usually enough to keep them happy and healthy. They love puzzle toys, gentle games of fetch and learning new tricks.

Yorkies generally live 12 to 15 years, often longer with good care. Like many small breeds, they can be prone to dental issues, knee problems and a sensitive windpipe, so regular vet visits and a healthy weight are important. A good diet, clean teeth and daily attention go a long way.

Is a Yorkie Right for You?

If you want a small dog with a huge personality — loyal, playful, brave and endlessly charming — the Yorkie is hard to beat. It asks for your time, your lap and your love, and in return it gives you a companion who will be by your side for many years.

The Yorkshire Terrier may be tiny, but its heart is anything but small.

Don’t let the size fool you.
